Info:
The Bauhaus was the 20th century‘s most preeminent school of design, architecture and art, and its pedagogical programme and output still influence the field of design today.
A current exhibition at the Bauhaus-Archive/Museum of Design in Berlin, entitled „The Bauhaus Collection, Classic Modern Originals“ presents extracts from its collection.
Temporary special exhibitions showcase individual artists or current themes in modernist art, architecture and design.
In the museum‘s large halls, the world‘s largest collection of Bauhaus artefacts is drawn upon in a comprehensive display of the school‘s activities: architecture, furniture, ceramics, metalwork, photography, stage pieces and student work from the preliminary course, as well as works by the school‘s famous teachers including Walter Gropius, Paul Klee, Lyonel Feininger, Wassily Kandinsky, Josef
Albers, Oskar Schlemmer and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe.
The collection of artistic photography from members of the Bauhaus is centred around pieces by inspirational artists/teachers Lucia Moholy, László Moholy-Nagy and Walter Peterhans.
Their work – predominantly from the twenties and early-thirties – represents the quintessence of photographic expression at the time: experiment and snapshot, composition and portrait, and
object and architectural photography. In all, the collection comprises 5,000 prints (sub-divided into 4,000 vintage prints and 1,000 modern prints) by 117 artists from the Bauhaus and its sphere, as well as some 1,500 original negatives of works by Lucia Moholy, Herbert Schürmann and Eugen Batz. The bulk of this collection is made up of the estate of Lucia Moholy, with her documentation of the Bauhaus‘ buildings and artefacts.
