The Salt Trading Route: a themed journey through idyllic rural Bavaria

A great way to explore history is from the saddle of a bike.
The historical Salt Trading Route is 109 kilometres long and leads into the foothills of the Alps through the little towns of Bad Reichenhall and Laufen on the River Salzach.
The numerous chapels, churches and monasteries along the route are the ideal places to stop for a rest and the traditional country inns and beer gardens offer sustenance after a hard day‘s cycling. After Tittmoning, the town of Burghausen and its castle appear on the horizon.

At 1,043 metres, Burghausen Castle is the longest castle in Europe.
As far as Tittmoning, the Salt Trading Route and the Benedict Trail follow the same route, but as you leave the town, the two diverge and the Salt Trading Route descends to the riverside meadows along the Salzach and through quaint villages to the River Inn and the Inn Cycle Route.
Just a few miles from here is the village of Marktl, the birthplace of the pope. The „Salz. Spuren zwischen Salzach & Inn“ walking and cycling map is available for €5.70.
