Intrigue in the Middle Ages: AufRuhr 1225! exhibition

The LWL Museum for Archaeology in Herne is hosting ‚AufRuhr 1225! Of Knights, Castles and Intrigue‘ from 27 February to 28 November 2010, an exhibition which is sure to generate interest in the history of the area.
Today the Ruhr is the third largest conurbation in the European Union, but back in the Middle Ages it had a greater number of castles that most other regions.

AufRuhr 1225! is the largest medieval exhibition ever to be shown in the region and invites visitors to take a closer look at a criminal case from history. The murder of the Archbishop of Cologne, Engelbert I, in 1225 had far-reaching consequences: castles were burned down, members of the aristocracy were executed and the region was left desolate through innumerable conflicts. Recounting the lives and ultimate death of the Archbishop and his rival Frederick of Isenberg, the exhibition tells of murder and feuds, power struggles and triumphs, robber barons and nobles. Magnificent items of international stature shed light on the many facets of the Middle Ages in the Ruhr and occupy an exhibition space of more than 1,500 square metres. An outdoor programme in eleven castles and palaces in the region accompanies the exhibition.
