Parade marking 300 years of Meissen Porcelain

Meissen, a town famous for both wine and porcelain, stages a wine festival every year.

From 24 to 26 September 2010, bands and musicians will perform a broad repertoire of jazz, rock and even punk at various venues. Many courtyards and cellars open to the public especially for the wine festival. A gala parade takes place on the Sunday of the wine festival to mark the 300th anniversary of the Meissen Porcelain Manufactory. The highlight will be a
living ‘Procession of Dukes’ with almost 100 participants dressed in historical costume, 45 of them on horseback. They will be representing the procession of the former rulers of Saxony depicted in a frieze of Meissen tiles, the biggest ever made by the company, on the wall of Dresden Palace stables.

Mining, porcelain manufacture and typical styles of porcelain from different eras will also be featured in the parade.

Anyone interested in the current work of the Meissen Manufactory should make a note in their diary for 23 October 2010, when the Meissen workshops will be open to the public free of charge from 10am to 5pm. It‘s a chance to see the workstations of porcelain modellers and sculptors, underglaze and overglaze painters, and to admire the exquisite craftsmanship that
makes Meissen porcelain so special. Children can try their hand at modelling in the white glaze department and enter a painting competition at the drawing school.

The Meissen Manufactory restoration workshop shows visitors how damaged collector‘s items are professionally restored to their original condition. The opportunity to buy some Meissen porcelain at reduced prices is another good reason to visit the Meissen Manufactory.
