Tapestries at the Residenz Palace in Würzburg

Until 31 October 2010, the Bavarian Palace Department is exhibiting a collection of exquisite 18th century tapestries at Würzburg’s Residenz Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

It features works from the famous French manufactory in Beauvais and the workshop of Andreas Pirot in Würzburg. The exhibition is the first time that almost all surviving pieces from the Würzburg manufactory have been displayed together.
All of the newly exhibited tapestries, some of which are as big as 26 square metres, have been extensively restored in recent years to bring out their magnificent colours and fine texture. The presentation for the Chinese tapestries has been specially designed for these delicate fabrics.

It is lit in a way that allows these 18th century masterpieces to be marvelled at close hand.
