German Tradition: the May Tree (1st of May holiday)
1st of May is a public holiday in Germany and in English you would call it May Day.
It goes along with celebrations including dancing, traditional songs, and … you wouldn’t have guessed it, some alcoholic beverages.
The May Tree (in German ‘Maibaum’) is a symbolic tree and erected on the market square. It is basically a white-and-blue pole. Tradition also is that it might be stolen by the neighboring town and only given back for a ransom,… like beer.
