What’s up USA? In OCTOBER 2016
During this month the annual U.S. Greencard Lottery is running. See www.magazineusa.com/us/info/show.aspx?unit=immigration
7-October is World Smile Day 🙂 It’s said the inventor of the Smiley Face symbol (Harvey Ball from Massachusetts) initiated the World Smile Day in 1999. He created the Smiley Face artwork in 1963. The motto is: Do an act of kindness. Help one person smile!
6-Oct is German-American Day — it commemorates the date 6-Oct 1683 when 13 families from Krefeld, Germany, landed in Philadelphia and founded Germantown as the first German settlement. The German-American Day celebrates German American heritage.
On 9-Oct the Chicago Marathon takes place.
Monday, 10-Oct is Columbus Day (annually on the 2nd Monday of the month) – the day commemorates the arrival of Christopher Columbus on 12-Oct-1492.
16-Oct is Boss Day — as the name suggests you should honor your boss and be thankful. Well, that raises the question in what era that idea was created. Nowadays, some people refer to Boss Day also as ‘brown-nosing day’. No comment.
15-Oct is the annual ‘Sweetest Day’ — it’s said the candy industry invented that day which is celebrated on the 3rd Saturday of October.
Mostly known in Midwest states and in the northeast of the United States, however, the candy industry is keen on making it known to the entire nation and world.
31-Oct is Halloween — it seems this day gains importance with every year. More costumes, more parties, more commerce. It’s still an exciting day for kids, though. However, nowadays parents do it right and accompany their kids. Times have changed.
On of the biggest events for adults is e.g. the Key West Fantasy Fest.
Last but not least: don’t miss it, DST (Daylight Saving Time) ends on 6-NOVEMBER this year. At 3am clocks go back to 2am and correct, you ‘get your 1 hour back’ and can sleep longer.
Most Western European countries turn back the clocks on October-30 !!!
