Four Hills tournament – New Year’s Ski Jumping

Thursday, 02-Dec-2010

The first New Year’s Ski Jumping event was held in Garmisch-Partenkirchen in 1922.

Today the New Year’s Ski Jumping is a World Cup event and the second jumping competition in the annual Four Hills tournament (Vierschanzen Tournee), which is broadcast internationally by up to 25 television stations.

Around 30,000 fans flock to Garmisch-Partenkirchen every year to watch the sporting action.
Numerous visitors all wishing each other a happy New Year, plus musical entertainment and the sound of countless cow bells, creates a great atmosphere, even away from the jump itself.
The jumpers start their warm-up on the great Olympic jump at 11.30am on New Year’s Eve, followed by the qualifier jumps from 1.45pm before it all really kicks off on New Year’s Day. The 50 competitors start their trial runs at 12 noon and at 2pm the starting pistol sounds for the first jump of round one of the competition.
The top 30 then qualify for the subsequent final round.

These days, the annual opening ceremony of the Four Hills tournament takes place in Oberstdorf in the Allgäu, where spectators don’t just marvel at the record sporting achievements but also celebrate a ski festival that is enjoyed by all. A supporting programme of entertainment starts with the official opening of the event on 27 December in the Nordic Park. The qualifying jumps start the day after at 4pm and the final takes place on 29 December.

Thursday, 02-Dec-2010

The world’s top skiers will meet in Garmisch-Partenkirchen for the FIS Alpine Ski World Championships 2011™  from 7 to 20 February 2011.

The organisers are expecting 400 participating athletes from more than 70 countries and about 200,000 spectators to attend. The championships include competitions in five disciplines – Downhill, Super-G, Super Combined, Giant Slalom and Slalom – for both the men’s and women’s categories. In addition there is also a mixed (men and women) competition of the national teams. The slalom race takes place on the slopes of the Gudiberg and has a home straight that leads into the Olympic ski stadium and ski jump in Partenkirchen. All the other races take place on the Kandahar with the finishing line in Garmisch. The Kandahar downhill run in Garmisch is considered one of the most challenging in the Alpine Ski World Cup.

The organisers have designed a complete package of sustainable and environmentally friendly travel arrangements, with World Cup ticket holders entitled to free travel on local trains in Bavaria when journeying to this important ski event.
Special train services pick up those travelling to and from Munich. There will also be special daily trains from Innsbruck and Reutte/Tyrol in Austria to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, with an InterCityExpress service over the weekend.

Travel on these trains is also included in the World Cup admission ticket.

The international sled dog race held in Spremberg, Lusatia, from 20 to 21 November is a more unusual sporting attraction. The dogs follow a trail consisting of a series of inclines, exhilarating descents and many corners across the Ratsheide heath. The start and finishing lines are located right beside

Rhine in Düsseldorf for the FIS Cross-Country Skiing World Cup Sprint 2010. What seemed like a mad
idea before it was first held eight years ago – a skiing event in the middle of a city – has become an
annual highlight in the sporting calendar.

Schwangau

Active holidaymakers, culturally minded visitors and those who appreciate clear and crisp winter days will all enjoy the wintertime hiking paths, cross-country ski trails certified by the German Skiing Association (DSV) and the famous view of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau castles from the 4km Tegelberg downhill run. The picturesque village of Schwangau, the numerous glistening frozen lakes and the DSV’s Nordic Active Centre make for tranquil family holidays with plenty of opportunity for physical activity and mental relaxation. In fact, floodlit sporting activities continue after dark thanks to snow-sure night-skiing under lights in the winter sports arena at the foot of the two castles and on the well-lit Neuschwanstein cross-country circuit, which offers breathtaking views from its snow-covered altitude of 2,000m. Visitors seeking recovery will find relaxation by simply inhaling the air (quite literally) at the local climatic health resort. They can also enjoy a complete break from the daily grind by taking advantage of extended winter walks along signposted paths, family-friendly tobogganing on three natural runs and one well-maintained family run, pristine snowshoe trails and leisurely hut-to-hut trekking.

Alpine winter in Füssen, Bavaria
Füssen in the Allgäu offers visitors alternative winter-break activities in snowy surroundings, such as horse-drawn sleigh rides, walks to feed the local wildlife (with the opportunity of seeing up to 200 free-roaming deer) and snow-shoe tours well off the beaten track.
Beginners will have no trouble getting into the swing of things with the help of the experienced guides.

From Christmas until the end of March, skiing enthusiasts, snowboarders,  cross-country skiers and walkers can take ‘ski safari’ trips to the most beautiful pistes in this winter sports region, with a Füssen ski bus taking them to a different skiing area every day. A chairlift also takes alpine tobogganers to the tavern on the Buchenbergalm peak for a quick respite before they hurtle down the floodlit toboggan run, while other visitors meet up on the frozen Hopfensee lake to take part in the local game of Bavarian curling.
